Before you go on to read this article, you should first know what mesothelioma is. It is a form of cancer which is caused due to long and sustained exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral which occurs naturally in the form of fibers and is used in flooring, roofing, insulation, etc. Mesothelioma is an incurable form of cancer and derives its name from the mesothelioma which it affects. The mesothelioma is the inner lining of most of the organs of the body and is like a protective lining of the body. Thus mesothelioma most commonly affects the lining of the lungs, heart and abdominal cavity. The lung is the most common area of infection.
The asbestos fibers can enter the body through different ways. The most common way is through breathing.
1. One of the greatest risks for Mesothelioma is a personal history of exposure to asbestos. If you worked in an industry that used this material, then you are one of the millions exposed to asbestos.
2. Industries making products of home insulation, construction materials, brake pads, electrical equipment, boilers, welding supplies, ship engines, and hot water piping use asbestos materials, so if you work in any such workplace, you are at greater risk than most.
3. Even the walls and tiles in your house contain asbestos – while these are not a risk by themselves, disturbing the material can release the dangerous fibers into the air – inhaling these is a major risk.
There are still many gross injustices that are being carried out to stop mesothelioma legislation. The Congress has been trying to pass a bill which will take away mesothelioma patients’ right to sue. A judge has passed a ruling to create a multimillion dollar fund to aid patients. Now at first sight, it seems like a magnanimous gesture, doesn’t it? The fund was actually created so that mesothelioma patients would not sue the companies for funds. All this is being done because these influential and plutocratic corporations are pressurizing the government to save them. Life and society is being ruled by money and people who have it. But I am not saying this to make you lose hope. On the contrary this should make you fight even harder. Do not be intimidated by such formidable capitalist propaganda. Stand up and fight for what is rightly yours and your family’s. Continue reading
