
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is practically always caused by previous exposure to asbestos. The patient suffering from mesothelioma develops malignant cells in the mesothelium. Mesothelium a protective lining that covers most of the body’s internal organs. These tumors generally grows in the areas like the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart). The people working in jobs where they have been exposed to the asbestos dust and fiber, and have inhaled asbestos particles develop mesothelioma. There is no connection between mesothelioma and smoking.
Mesothelioma or asbestos cancer takes a number of decades for a cancer to build up due to exposure.
