Mesothelioma is a kind of aggressive cancer which is caused due to sustained levels of asbestos exposure over long periods of time. This cancer usually attacks the lungs, the lining of the heart or the abdominal cavity as well. Asbestos fibers which are inhaled or ingested through the mouth lodge themselves in the mesothelium and cause mutations in cell formation, thereby leading to the cancer. Mesothelioma can happen not only through direct but even indirect contact in the sense that family members of a person who has had long exposure to asbestos can contract the condition through him as well. The person doing the laundry for a mesothelioma patient stands the chance of contracting the condition. However, for a person to get the cancer there has to be a certain level of asbestos exposure that can lead to the development of this condition.
There have been thousands of people who have lived for years in asbestos contaminated atmospheres without having the least idea of what harm it can do. In fact people still do exist in asbestos atmospheres. Even small amounts of the deadly mineral can cause irreparable harm to the body.
There has been a lot of controversy about the amount of asbestos which can actually trigger of mesothelioma in a person. There have been different cases which have thrown up different results or standards. In some, industrial workers have been exposed very extensively to high levels of asbestos for many years before even developing mesothelioma. However, in other cases people have been exposed to asbestos for periods of time as short as two to three months, or even a few weeks for that matter. It is just not the amount of exposure in terms of time but also the intensity or the level of exposure to asbestos. Thus if a person has been exposed to asbestos for any length of time, the first thing to do, is to note down the length of time, the level of exposure, and the way he or she was exposed to the same. On the basis of this data, a mesothelioma lawsuit can be filed against a company, or against any authority that was responsible for your exposure. Thus, as of now, no universal standard of hazardous asbestos exposure has been established as cases always vary widely form one another.
Another thing that must be noted is the fact that mesothelioma as a cancer has a very long gestation period. The effects of the condition can be felt after a long lapse of time which can be as long as two to three decades even. Children whose parents have been exposed to asbestos are now developing mesothelioma in their late adulthood.
